Community members recognized on Earth Day

A local sustainability committee held its annual commemoration of Earth Day, recognizing three residents for their environmental efforts.

Along with the presentation of awards, the gathering at the St. Joseph Convention and Visitors Bureau included an official proclamation from Mayor John Josendale.

“The goals of the (Sustainable Environment Advisory Committee) encourages citizens of the community to ultimately improve energy efficiency and decrease greenhouse gas emissions,” Josendale said as part of his official proclamation.

He then officially proclaimed April 22, 2024, as “Environmental Stewardship on Earth Day.”

Clean Alchemy received a sustainable business award for innovative green business.

Three residents were also recognized for their efforts in environmental sustainability in various ways in the community.

Brenda Riley was honored for her work in preserving and maintaining homes in eco-friendly ways in St. Joseph’s Historic District.

Amy Heath, owner of The Lucky Tiger clothing store, was recognized for helping the community recycle and reuse unwanted clothing.

Finally, Sara Parks of Toe Beans Coffee was presented an award for eco-friendly business practices.

All recipients shared highlights from their work from the previous year, and SEAC committee members were introduced. The group shared a variety of upcoming events, as well as key sustainability goals for St. Joseph in the coming year. These goals included an emphasis on cutting down on single-use plastics.
