Affects of liver cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, liver cancer affects more than twice as many men as it does women.
ACS estimates indicated that slightly more than 30,000 men would be diagnosed with liver cancer in 2020, while fewer than 13,000 women would receive such a diagnosis.
Those figures are relatively low compared to other cancers, and especially low when compared to other parts of the world.
The ACS notes that liver cancer is the most common type of cancer in many countries in sub-Saharan Africa and southeast Asia.
But statistics from the ACS indicate that liver cancer has the lowest number of estimated new cases of any of the 10 most common cancers in the United States. However, liver cancer remains very deadly.
While ACS researchers estimated there would be roughly 42,000 new cases of liver cancer in the United States in 2019, those same estimates also indicated more than 31,000 people in the U.S. would die from the disease in 2019. The ratio of new cases to deaths is especially high when compared to more common cancers. For example, statistics from the ACS indicate that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the U.S., with nearly 270,000 estimated new cases in 2019. However, the number of estimated deaths from breast cancer in 2019 was between 41,000 and 50,000. That disparity underscores the need for more research into treating liver cancer and even the benefits of more liver cancer education, including the steps people can take to reduce their risk of developing the disease.
