A familiar face will take the reins of the St. Joseph School District in July.

Ashly McGinnis, who currently serves as the district’s assistant superintendent of academic services, has been promoted to replace retiring superintendent Gabe Edgar. The St. Joseph School District Board of Education announced its decision Wednesday afternoon.

The board unanimously voted to offer McGinnis a three-year contract, which will begin on July 1, according to a release from the district.

“As someone who knows our district inside and out, Dr. McGinnis is uniquely positioned to build on our successes and lead us forward with continuity and purpose,” LaTonya Williams, SJSD board president said. “The board is confident that Dr. McGinnis will continue to strengthen partnerships with families, staff and the broader community while maintaining our district’s commitment to excellence.”

The announcement comes one day after the board interviewed four finalists for the position, which included another district employee, Lara Gilpin, director of secondary education.

McGinnis said she is “honored and humbled” by the promotion.

“Both our district and city hold a special place in my heart, and I am committed to fostering a forward-thinking approach to prepare our students for success in an ever-changing world,” she said. “Together, with our incredible staff, families and community, we will work tirelessly to ensure every student is supported, inspired, and empowered to achieve their full potential.”

Edgar will help get McGinnis up to speed before he retires officially on June 30.
