US–SEVERE WEATHER

Storms with lightning and hail hitting upper Midwest with the potential for strong tornadoes

SUMMARY: Storms with lightning and hail and at least one observed tornado were moving through the upper Midwest with the potential for strong tornadoes. The National Weather Service says the highest risks were Monday afternoon in portions of southern Minnesota, including the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, northern Iowa and western Wisconsin. The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities said Monday afternoon that they had a report of an observed tornado looking west from Fairmont, Minnesota, which is southwest of Minneapolis. Forecasters say the worst of the weather appeared to have missed the heavily populated Twin Cities area.

US–ETHANOL-HIGHER BLEND

The EPA is allowing the sale of cheaper, higher-ethanol E15 gasoline across the US this summer

SUMMARY: The Environmental Protection Agency says consumers across the U.S. will still be able to buy cheaper E15 gasoline this summer. The EPA announced Monday that it has issued an emergency waiver to allow sales of the higher-ethanol blend gasoline in all states after May 1. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin signaled that he plans to keep a waiver in effect through Sept. 15, when E15 sales would typically be allowed in all states again. E15 gasoline with 15% ethanol is cheaper than E10 gasoline with a 10% blend. Environmentalists argue that allowing E15 sales year-round could potentially damage the air and water.

US–REPUBLICANS-TOWN HALLS

Republicans in the toughest swing districts become hard to find for people angry about Trump

SUMMARY: Republican members of Congress have gone to great lengths to avoid public meetings with their constituents over their two-week Easter recess. Nationwide, Republicans hosted only a handful of in-person town halls during the congressional break. The most vulnerable House Republicans were especially shielded from public view. Some didn’t answer their office phones for days. None of them, a collection of swing-district conservatives from across states like Colorado, California, Iowa and Pennsylvania, hosted in-person events that were open to the public. Just one planned a telephone town hall. Others favored smaller invitation-only gatherings with local officials promoted only after they were over.

The paramedic was identified as 29-year-old Graham Hoffman. He had worked for the Kansas City fire department for three years. No attorney was listed for Bossell in online court records.

US–SUPREME COURT-DISABILITY RIGHTS

Disability-rights arguments grow heated at Supreme Court, though sweeping ruling appears unlikely

SUMMARY: A disability-rights case at the Supreme Court grew unusually heated on Monday, including accusations of lying and references to one side’s position being a potential “five-alarm fire.” The appeal is from a teenage girl with a rare form of epilepsy whose family says some courts have made it too hard to sue public schools that fail to make sure students get what they need to learn. The school says that all disability-rights claims should be held to the same higher legal standard. The justices appeared skeptical of that argument, which family says that would be a “five alarm fire” for the disability rights community.

US-MED–FOOD DYES

How bugs and beet juice could play roles in the race to replace artificial dyes in food

SUMMARY: U.S. health officials are pushing to get artificial colors out of the nation’s food supply. Sensient Technologies Corp. is one of the world’s largest dyemakers. The company has seen a surge in businesses rushing to covert their products from synthetic to natural colors. The process to change from petroleum-based dyes to colors made from vegetables, fruits, flowers and even insects won’t be cheap or easy. Health advocates have long called for the removal of the dyes. They cite mixed evidence that the colors are linked to behavior problems and obesity in kids.
