KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Lois Vivian Brewer (aka Nanny), of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Feb. 9, 2024, at North Kansas City Hospital, after a brief illness.

She had a deep love for her family and friends. She cherished the Lord and continuously expressed her gratitude for a long life full of remarkable memories and diverse experiences.

She was born on Jan. 4, 1924, in St. Joseph, to Cleota Madison Washington-Tapp (Henry) and Floyd Edward Washington Sr.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Norman Franklin Brewer Sr., St. Joseph; son, Norman Franklin Brewer Jr., Cleveland, Ohio; and brothers, William Madison Washington (Eunice), St. Joseph, and Floyd Edward Washington Jr. (Cora Mae), Cleveland.

Lois Brewer leaves behind to cherish her memory: daughter, of the home, De Lois Jean Brewer aka Jeanne, Kansas City, Missouri; son, Clarence Edward Brewer, Chicago, Illinois; daughter-in-law, Mary Brewer, Cleveland,.

Her greatest pride and joy were her relationships with family including grandchildren, Stefan Gilbert (Kristina), Stacey Gene, Straud Gregory (Elizabeth) Brewer, all of Kansas City, Missouri, and Clayton (Teresa) Brewer, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, Kimberly (Daniel) Morrison, of Clarksville, Tennessee, and Ebonie, Tanya, Kimberley Smith, of Cleveland; 12 great-grandchildren; six great-great- grandchildren with a great-great-grandson due in April; seven nieces and nephews; host of great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews; and cousins, spawning across the states of Ohio, Washington, Florida, Tennessee, California, Wyoming, Arizona, Indiana, Texas, Virginia and Colorado.

Lois had a variety of occupations throughout her life. She retired from the United States Postal Service and was a passionate community volunteer in St. Joseph. She also worked for the Economic Opportunity Corporation serving as a neighborhood coordinator and devoted time to the open door food kitchen and meals on wheels. Lois was also a licensed beautician for many years.

She joined St. Francis Baptist Temple in June of 1938 and was a faithful lifelong member. She served in the Naomi Circle Women’s Mission, Usher Board and Historical Committee. She leaves behind a legacy of love, pride, kindness, and faith in the Lord.

She will live forever in our hearts.

Visitation 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2024, at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Funeral service 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23, at St. Francis Baptist Temple. Interment Leavenworth National Cemetery. As published in the St. Joseph News-Press.
