US–TARIFFS-IOWA
Iowa relies on exports and its senior senator opposes tariffs. Trump is pressuring both
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s tariffs are likely to cost Iowa farmers their biggest market for the hundreds of millions of bushels of soybeans they grow every year. And it’s put Sen. Chuck Grassley, an anti-tariff warrior, in a difficult spot in a state inordinately dependent on agricultural exports as the nation’s second-leading soybean producer. Grassley proposed a bill this month with support from both parties that would require presidents to justify future tariffs to Congress but would not affect the measures Trump has put in place. The White House threatened to veto it. Grassley defended Trump’s handling of the economy at a town hall meeting Tuesday.

US–UNITEDHEALTHCARE-HEADQUARTERS-ARREST
Man arrested outside UnitedHealthcare is now charged with firearms counts and threatening violence
SUMMARY: Prosecutors say a man who was arrested outside the headquarters of UnitedHealthcare in Minnesota had a history of mental health issues and threatened to shoot up corporate facilities. The 26-year-old was charged Tuesday in Hennepin County District Court with two felony firearms counts and two felony counts of threating violence. Police and company officials say there is no indication that the subject had specific grievances against UnitedHealthcare itself. But security was tightened at the corporate campus in the Minneapolis suburb of Minnetonka after the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was shot in New York City on Dec. 4.

US–SANDERS-PROGRESSIVES-RED STATES
In a bid to corral the anti-Trump resistance, Bernie Sanders, AOC visit red states
SUMMARY: Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is taking his “Fighting Oligarchy” tour deep into Trump territory alongside his fellow progressive champion Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. This week, the duo drew the same types of large crowds that they got in liberal and battleground states. Utah, Idaho and Montana will almost certainly remain Republican strongholds for the near future. But the events offer a glimpse of widespread Democratic anger over the direction of President Donald Trump’s administration and a dose of hope to progressives living in the places where they’re most outnumbered.

US–BIDEN
Biden alleges Trump has ‘taken a hatchet’ to Social Security in his first post-presidency speech
SUMMARY: Former President Joe Biden warns that President Donald Trump has “taken a hatchet” to Social Security, weighing in on a critical issue for millions of Americans. The 82-year-old Democrat, who has largely avoided speaking publicly since leaving the White House in January, delivered his pointed message during a speech Tuesday at the national conference of Advocates, Counselors and Representatives for the Disabled in Chicago. Democrats across the nation are offering similar warnings for what they described as a Social Security Day of Action. Biden charged, “In fewer than 100 days, this new administration has done so much damage and so much destruction.”

US–ABORTION MISSOURI
Missouri lawmakers advance proposed repeal of abortion-rights measure approved by voters
SUMMARY: Missouri’s Republican-led House has advanced a proposed repeal of an abortion-rights measure approved by voters. A proposed constitutional amendment endorsed Tuesday would replace the abortion-rights measure with a ban on abortion, except in cases of medical emergency or fetal anomaly, or in cases of rape or incest up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. The measure still needs another House vote and Senate approval to go to voters. Democrats contend Republicans are seeking to overturn the will of voters. But Republicans counter that they’re simply giving voters another chance to weigh in.

US–TRUMP-COAL
Trump exempts nearly 70 coal plants from Biden-era rule on mercury and other toxic air pollution
SUMMARY: The Trump administration has granted nearly 70 coal-fired power plants a two-year exemption from federal requirements to reduce emissions of toxic chemicals such as mercury, arsenic and benzene. A roster posted quietly as of Tuesday on the Environmental Protection Agency’s website lists at least 66 coal-fired plants that are receiving exemptions from Biden-era rules under the Clean Air Act. The actions follow an executive order last week by President Donald Trump aimed at boosting the struggling coal industry. Among plants receiving exemptions is the massive Colstrip Generating Station in Montana. It is a leading source of toxic air pollutants such as lead and arsenic.
