Honorable Judge Theodore “Ted” Stephen Elo, age 65, passed away Sunday, March 30, surrounded by family and friends in a St. Joseph hospital. He was born Nov. 19, 1959, and was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph.

Ted excelled at sports playing baseball, basketball and football. On the last day of high school in 1977, Ted dove into a swimming hole and was paralyzed from that day forward.

Ted graduated from St. Patrick’s Grade School, Bishop LeBlond High School, class of 1978. He went on to graduate from Missouri Western State University (then State College) with a bachelors in History and Political Science. He then earned his Law degree from the University of St. Louis School of Law.

Ted was a diehard St. Louis Cardinals fan. He was an Eagle Scout, member of the Knights of Columbus, an ardent supporter of Bishop LeBlond High School, and a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. Ted practiced private sector law for nearly 20 years before taking a position as an assistant city attorney for the city of St. Joseph, in 2003. As an Assistant City Attorney he helped the city eliminate unsafe buildings, enforce code violations, navigate builders and developers through the processes at the city, and champion commercial partnerships for St. Joseph and regional businesses. In 2022 he was elected as Municipal Judge for the City of St. Joseph.

Ted was preceded in death by his loving parents, Pete and Janet (Hausman) Elo; beloved sisters, Katrina Elo and Jenifer Hindery.

Survivors include brothers, Peter (Miachelle) Elo, Lawrenceville, Georgia, Gerald “Butch” (Carmen) Elo, Orlando, Florida, Richard (Amy) Elo, Orlando; and sister, Glorianna (Allan) Black, Indiantown, Florida; brother-in-law, Pat Hindery, of St. Joseph; 11 nieces and nephews: Heather Elo, Amanda Miller, Melissa Lepchitz, Tylor Hindery, Jelena Davis, Austin Hindery, Ana Harding, Andrew Elo, Marlin Black, Zander Elo, and Kailan Elo; 14 great-nieces and nephews; and an aunt, Carol (Hausman) Walsh, Omaha, Nebraska; and too many cousins to count.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to his “girls”, the women who were his caregivers through the years. You made it possible for Ted to live the independent life he had. You too are family. Many thanks to those he worked with in City Hall and the Court.

The Family will receive friends 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday with the Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. Friday at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Fr. Garrett King Celebrant. Inurnment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery, St Joseph. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church or Bishop LeBlond High School.
