The circled area shows where a proposed new high school could be built, as of Monday, March 31, in the Southside of St. Joseph. The School Board will announce the official location after official documents are signed, pending the results of the April 8 election.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) - The target area for a potential new high school in the southern part of St. Joseph has been tightened.

In a Monday announcement, the St. Joseph School District Board of Education said it has narrowed down the land options to acquire for a new high school.

"We wanted to make it truly in the South end of town and not just in the south," said LaTonya Williams, St. Joseph School Board president. "If you're looking around in the South end, it will encompass a majority of the location that's in the circle."

The St. Joseph City Council also announced it's support for Proposition 2 during it's Monday night meeting.

Williams said seeing the support, gives her hope.

"I think it was a lot of relief, and it gives us a lot of hope," said Williams. "Because we're not able to do this on our own. We will always need the support of other community leaders, and so, to be able to come to council and get unanimous approval immediately after putting out this map, I mean, it's an amazing feeling."

Williams said the exact location isn't being announced quite yet.

That will happen pending the results of the April 8 election and when the land is acquired and papers are signed.

Williams also said those with questions regarding the long-range plan or the construction of a new high school should reach out to a school board member.
