ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) -- Work on a major South Side road project will begin a few weeks later than scheduled.

Pre-construction utility work is delaying the start of an intersection improvement project at U.S. Route 59 and Alabama Street to Tuesday, April 1. The project was scheduled to start on March 18.

Amino Brothers Co., Inc. will realign roadways and driveways and add turn lanes, sidewalks and storm drainage in five stages as part of the Missouri Department of Transportation project.

The work aims to improve sight distance, tractor-trailer turning movements and capacity for vehicles stopped at the Route U railroad crossing.

Stage 1 will begin on Alabama Street between Route 59 and Sherman Street and that area will be closed during construction. The work will realign Alabama on the east side of Route 59 and create right-turn lanes. This stage of the project is expected to be finished by mid-August.
