MINNESOTA – UPCOMING – NEWS

US NUDIFICATION APPS

DESCRIPTION: Minnesota is considering a new strategy for cracking down “nudification” technology. A bill that has bipartisan support would target companies that run websites and apps allowing people to upload a photo that then would be transformed into explicit images or videos. States across the country are considering strategies for regulating AI, and most have banned the dissemination of sexually explicit “deepfakes” or “revenge porn” whether they were produced with AI or not. The idea behind the new Minnesota legislation is to prevent the material from being created in the first place — before it spreads online. By Steve Karnowski. UPCOMING: 800 words, photos.

US–SEVERE WEATHER

Storms, possible twisters to threaten the South just as New Orleans celebrates Mardi Gras

SUMMARY: Powerful storms bearing a threat of tornadoes are expected to punch through Louisiana and other parts of the South on Tuesday. That’s expected to happen just as huge parades in New Orleans and other cities are set to kick off annual Mardis Gras celebrations. The storms will also be one of the first big tests for meteorologists at the National Weather Service after hundreds of forecasters were fired under President Donald Trump’s moves to slash the size of the federal government. The New Orleans area is bracing for strong storms, though Fat Tuesday parades remained scheduled in the city. However, officials canceled planned Mardi Gras Day parades in a large nearby suburb due to the storm threat.

US FARGO VOTING BAN

DESCRIPTION: When Fargo voters approved a unique voting system in 2018, their goal was to elect candidates with broader support to lead North Dakota’s largest city. It worked — maybe too well. Now the state Legislature is moving to ban the system, with one lawmaker saying it elects “vanilla” candidates rather than the “principled” leaders he thinks Fargo residents deserve.

US–OKLAHOMA EXECUTION-CUSTODY FIGHT

A federal inmate transferred to Oklahoma to be put to death

SUMMARY: A former federal prison inmate is now in Oklahoma custody as the state seeks to execute him for a 1999 killing in Tulsa. Federal officials transferred 60-year-old George John Hanson to state custody over the weekend. The move by U.S. Bureau of Prisons officials follows through on President Donald Trump’s sweeping executive order to more actively support the death penalty. Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond had sought Hanson’s transfer earlier this year, and Trump’s new Attorney General Pam Bondi ordered his transfer last month. Drummond says his office is expected to request an execution date for Hanson later this year.
