Stuber Health offering breast and cervical cancer screenings

The Stuber Health Center will take women's health services on the road with their new mobile clinic services beginning Friday, Feb. 28.
As part of the "show me healthy women" state program, The Stuber Health Center, in partnership with Heart to Heart International and the St. Joseph YWCA, is offering a mobile clinic to offer breast and cervical cancer screenings.
Starting Feb. 28, every fourth Friday of the month, the clinic will travel to a new location in St. Joseph to ensure women across town have access to free health care.
"One of the barriers, you can say is like a structural barrier, is transportation issues," Executive Director of the Stuber Health Center, Latha Varghese said. "So, for us, we decided maybe it's time for us to go and meet the people where they are to remove that barrier."
According to the CDC, cancer is the second leading cause of death for women in the United States, but Varghese said early detection can lower the number of cancer-related deaths in women.
"Breast cancer and cervical cancers, those are like on the top number causes for death," Varghese said. "But early recognition and prevention, you know, treating them in the right time actually helps."
Heart to Heart International connected with Stuber Health Services offering a mobile clinic to help with early detection of breast and cervical cancers for St. Joseph women.
"They said 'We are your neighbors in Kansas City, and we could provide the mobile so you can provide the service,'" Varghese said.
While Heart to Heart International provided the wheels, YWCA offered the parking spot.
The first stop for the mobile clinic will be at the YWCA located at 304 N. 8th St., in St. Joseph.
All women 21-years old or older can make an appointment for the clinic by calling 816-344-5233 or by visiting the mobile clinic for a walk-in checkup.
