Hughes, Laura V. 1924-2025 St. Joseph, Mo.

Laura Virgle Hughes, 100, St. Joseph, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Jan. 12, 2025. She was born May 1, 1924, to Edward and Lorraine Williams. Laura graduated from Bartlett High School and was a lifelong member of St. Francis Baptist Temple, where she served in the Mission, Naomi Circle, Children’s Choir Director, Sunday School Teacher, and as an usher.
She previously worked as a cook at Horace Mann School, Bullock Family Funeral Chapel and retired from the St. Joseph State Hospital. In addition, she enjoyed doing hair for others at her home and in nursing homes.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Edward, Nelson, Waymen, Eurcle, Marvin, Lamont, and Paul Williams; sisters, Charmain, Charlotte, Beverly, Anna Williams, and Bobetta Bundy; sons, Joseph R. Mays and Thomas Hughes; and daughter-in-law, Martha Shahid.
She is survived by her sons, Marvin Shahid, Douglas Hughes (Liz), and Mertland Hughes (Barbara); son, Obie Williams; daughter-in-law, Kae Mays; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
