SAN DIEGO (AP) — Kyle McCord threw for 453 yards and five touchdowns to break Deshaun Watson’s Atlantic Coast Conference season passing record and lead No. 22 Syracuse to a 52-35 victory over depleted-yet-scrappy Washington State in the Holiday Bowl on Friday night. LeQuint Allen rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns for his second straight 1,000-yard season for the Orange (10-3), who had their first 10-win season since 2018. Fran Brown joined Paul Pasqualoni (1991) as the only Orange coaches since World War II to win 10 game in their first season. The Cougars (8-5) lost their fourth straight game but were spirited despite losing coach Jake Dickert to Wake Forest, quarterback John Mateer to Oklahoma, both coordinators and the quarterbacks and running backs coach.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Kyle McCord broke Deshaun Watson’s Atlantic Coast Conference season passing yards record on a 50-yard completion to Darrell Gill Jr. on No. 22 Syracuse’s first play of the second half in a 52-35 Holiday Bowl victory overt Washington State on Friday night. McCord, the national passing leader, came in with 4,326 yards, which was fifth on the ACC’s season list, and needed 268 yards to break Watson’s record of 4,593, which he set in 15 games in 2016 at Clemson. McCord broke the record by a yard on the pass to Gil, who made a beautiful over-the-shoulder catch. McCord threw for 453 yards and five TDs as the Orange finished 10-3 under first-year coach Fran Brown. McCord pushed the ACC season record to 4,779 yards.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — In the new age of college football with the 12-team playoff, there were concerns over whether the bowl games would still mean anything. With players already frequently optioning out of these postseason games, the carrot of the playoff seemed like it might gut teams that just miss the chance at a national championship. The Pop-Tarts Bowl may be challenging that notion as No. 15 Miami and No. 18 Iowa State play each other with most players returning for the game.
UNDATED (AP) — The last time Nebraska sat out the bowl season for seven years in a row, the Big 12 was still the Big 8, the 10 schools in the Big Ten didn’t include the Cornhuskers, and Yankee Stadium was still the House that Ruth Built. That slump ended with an appearance in the short-lived Gotham Bowl at the original Yankee Stadium. The ballpark has been replaced, and so has the bowl game played in it. The Huskers will play Boston College in the Pinstripe Bowl on Saturday, ending the longest active bowl drought in any of the power conferences.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Miami football coach Mario Cristobal wants now-retired Miami men’s basketball coach Jim Larrañaga to do at least one more thing for the Hurricanes. Cristobal wants him to share all his knowledge. A day after Larrañaga announced his sudden retirement after 41 years as a collegiate head coach, the last 14 of them at Miami, Cristobal paid tribute Friday while wrapping up preparations for the Hurricanes’ appearance in the Pop-Tarts Bowl against Iowa State. Cristobal says his now-former colleague “is iconic.”
