RCPD to crack down on DUIs over New Year’s

By The Manhattan Mercury, Kan. (TNS)

Dec. 26—Riley County police officials say New Year’s is one of the top holidays for producing crashes in which at least one of the drivers involved is drunk or high, so they’ll be on the lookout over the next week

In a release Thursday, an RCPD spokeswoman said the department is joining law enforcement agencies across the state, including the Kansas Highway Patrol, in the New Year’s Taking Down DUI traffic enforcement campaign through Jan. 2.

The release didn’t state specific details of what the campaign will entail.

Officials encourage those planning to drink to plan ahead, leave their car at home and ride with a designated driver or take other transportation services. They also urge people hosting a party to ensure all guests have a sober ride home.

Additionally, they ask anyone who sees a driver they suspect might be intoxicated to call 911 and report it.

“Keep in mind that if you are going to be using any impairing substance, don’t even consider driving,” RCPD director Brian Peete said in a written statement. “Line up a ride with a sober acquaintance or other safe transportation before you go out. Make the right choice, the sober choice. Do it now.”
