Good morning, Lincoln. Here’s what you should know today.
Shooting victim ID’d
The Lincoln Police Department has identified the 20-year-old man who was shot and killed on Christmas Eve.
Johnathan McCray was fatally shot multiple times by his 16-year-old brother Tuesday morning, police say.
The brother, Kentrail McDaniel, was charged Thursday in adult court with manslaughter and using a firearm to commit a felony.
Pillen has surgery
Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen underwent a second successful surgery on Christmas Day to help stabilize the broken ribs he suffered when he fell from a horse earlier this week.
The 68-year-old governor is expected to remain in the hospital for several more days for recovery and observation.
The surgery on Wednesday at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha involved stabilizing the broken ribs using metal plates and was done to promote stronger long-term healing, assist with pain management and reduce the chances of complications.
An earlier surgery, performed when he arrived at the hospital, was to help stop bleeding. In addition to seven broken ribs, Pillen suffered a collapsed lung, fractures to a vertebrae and minor lacerations to his spleen and a kidney.
A slam-dunk sale
Michael Jordan’s iconic mansion is finally off the market, and a Lincoln native has the keys.
John Cooper is enjoying the early days of owning the 52,000-square-foot property in Highland Park, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. Cooper purchased the home earlier this month for $9.5 million, a 67% decrease from when the basketball legend listed the home for sale for $29 million in 2012.
Cooper went to Lincoln Southeast High School and graduated from UNL. He works as a partner for HAN Capital, a real estate company that owns self-storage facilities and RV parks.
Cooper says he doesn’t have any plans of disrupting the property’s history.
Said Cooper: “I will honor the property’s legacy. This place is great just the way it is.”
