Sonja “Sonie” G. (Hatton) Morgan, 86, passed away at home on Friday, Dec. 20, 2024, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Born June 20, 1938, in St. Joseph, to Dallas Monroe and Helen Mae (Brown) Hatton.
Sonie was a true Matriarch of her family, hosting all the family gatherings over many, many years. She was happiest surrounded by family and friends. Sonie’s family was very important to her as was her faith. She was one the Founding Charter members of Faith United Church. Sonie was active in many aspects of her church, from serving on multiple committees, singing in the choir over the years, teaching Sunday school, volunteering for vacation bible school and preparing and serving the various dinners the church provided.
Sonie’s strong Christian faith is what helped her through all of life’s challenges and her church family meant the world to her!
Sonie was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She enjoyed cooking, painting, crafts and gardening. She was happiest sitting on her front porch and loved visiting with family and friends while enjoying a glass of sweet tea. We found a partial note tucked into the side of her Bible that read “I was sitting here on the porch tonight looking at what a beautiful place the Lord has given me to live! He has been with me through all the times of my life. Good times and bad times, even….” the note ended but the sentiment was clear, she loved her life and her God.
Sonie was proceeded in death by her mother and father; late husband, Charles H. Morgan; her daughter, Terri L. Wisneski; and sisters, Donna K. Salazar and Janice L. Hinkle.
Sonie is survived by her children, Cindi (Cordonnier) Cress, Shellie (Cordonnier) Leidy and husband Chris, Charles “Chip” Morgan II; multiple grandchildren; great- grandchildren; great-great- grandchildren; sister, Judy Morgan; and her beloved dog, Chance; and feline companion, Sammy.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 2024, at the Rupp Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at Faith United Baptist Church, 8010 SW State Rte V, St. Joseph MO. The interment will be at the Mount Auburn Cemetery, St. Joseph.
