Customers in Buchanan County and statewide will notice a rarely seen decrease in one of their main utility bills beginning as early as next month.

Officials with Spire announced this week that the company has received approval from the Missouri Public Service Commission to implement lower gas rates for Missouri customers both in Spire East and Spire West effective Nov. 15. Customers in St. Joseph and Buchanan County are located in the Spire West division.

Compared to existing rates and assuming normal usage, the average monthly bill for the typical residential customer will decrease by $18.70 (17.41%) for Spire customers in western Missouri and $15.86 (16.18%) for customers in eastern Missouri.

Spire West’s rates for gas will change from $0.91988 to $0.62139 per ccf while Spire East’s charges for gas will change from $0.77588 to $0.52486 per ccf. One ccf is the equivalent of one hundred cubic feet of natural gas used to calculate bills.

The decrease is a result of a new Purchased Gas Adjustment approved by Missouri PSC that reflects lower gas prices and the recovery of deferred costs from Winter Storm Uri in 2021, which resulted in the National Weather Service issuing various winter weather alerts impacting more than 170 million Americans.
