Consumers should be alert to scams currently circulating that demand online payments.

The St. Joseph Police Department is specifically issuing a warning about emails that appear to be from PayPal or another online banking service that tell victims they owe money on their account.

The emails ask people to call a number and pay the scammer over the phone. Police are urging people not to follow these instructions and warn residents not to pay such demands with gift cards or Bitcoin as these are often signs of a scam because reputable businesses typically don’t ask for these forms of payment.

Contact your bank or the service provider directly to verify the emails before clicking on any links.
