RAVENWOOD, Mo. – Charles Elwood Goodson, 101, of Ravenwood, Missouri, passed away on Monday, Oct. 21, 2024, at Pine View Manor, in Stanberry, Missouri.
Charles was born on his parents’ farm in northwest Gentry County, Missouri, on Aug. 21, 1923. He completed the eighth-grade course of study at the McClanahan School (a one-room schoolhouse located near Alanthus Grove), and he attended Stanberry High School.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II, and he trained for the anticipated land invasion of Japan, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Following the Japanese surrender, he completed his service as part of the American post-war occupation force in Korea.
Returning from duty, he purchased a small farm in Gentry County. On Dec. 27, 1951, he married Leanna Ruth Thornton at the Alanthus Baptist Church, and together they lived and worked on the farm until they retired in 1985. After retirement, they lived in Ravenwood. Charles moved to Pine View Manor in 2019.
He was a member of Parnell Post 0528 of the American Legion and the First Baptist Church of Stanberry.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, George and Jesse Hern Goodson; three brothers, Kelton, Russell, and Laton Goodson; two sisters, Helen Jensen and Susie Warriner; and his wife, Leanna Goodson.
Charles is survived by a son, Todd Goodson (Lori Goodson), of Manhattan, Kansas; and two granddaughters, Ann Goodson Starnes, of Olathe, Kansas, and Caroline Goodson, of McPherson, Kansas.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at Roberson Funeral Home, Stanberry, with Funeral Services to follow at 2 p.m. A graveside service with Military Rites will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Ravenwood, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Pine View Manor, Stanberry, in care of Roberson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 153, Stanberry, MO 64489.
