Sports are filled with superstitions, and fans of the Kansas City Chiefs certainly have some.

The Chiefs will be chasing history at Super Bowl LIX by attempting to become the first team to win three championships in a row. Locally, St. Joseph fans will be incorporating their rituals to help make that happen.

“The one consistent thing through the years is my Chiefs lucky socks, and my sister bought them for me when Dick Vermeil was the coach, so they’re still going on,” Kerry Peppard said.

Peppard noticed the Chiefs began to win more when she had the socks on, so they've become a game-day staple.

These feelings of superstition extended to Peppard’s children, who would make her leave the room when games weren’t going well.

“When my children lived at home, they used to make me go in the kitchen because they thought I was bad luck,” she said.

For some fans, the point in the season can determine what they wear. Joshua Eivins wears Chiefs gear every Red Friday, but he incorporates more when the postseason arrives.

“Sometimes during the week, like the playoffs, I’ll wear Chiefs every single day just to get the luck going,” Eivins said.

Other fans, like Lindsay Laurent and Linda Rivera, even work exercises into their game-day rituals. When a game is close, Laurent begins doing squats when the Chiefs are on offense, and Rivera does them when the team is on defense.

“We stand in front of the TV and do squats for 20 minutes if we have to,” Laurent said.

Laurent said another ritual her family does when the Chiefs are in the Super Bowl is watching the first half at her parents' house and the second half in their own homes.

As fans continue to contribute to the team’s success with their rituals, the Chiefs are preparing for a familiar opponent, the Philadelphia Eagles, in what will be a rematch of Super Bowl LVII.

“We’re going to win,” Rivera said. “Definitely gonna win.”

“We got Mahomes in our pocket, man,” Laurent said.
