The St. Joseph School District Foundation hosted its first community breakfast event on Friday.

A large crowd of people showed up to learn more about the positive things the school district is doing.

The event was led by students from across the district, and one of the emcees, Central High School senior Michael Higdon, talked about the purpose of the event.

“I think it’s to show how good our school district is,” Higdon said. “Like, we have a really good school district and there’s a lot of good things that we’re trying to show off about it. And so this breakfast just kind of shows the community and everyone involved in the school district what our school district actually looks like.”

Julie Cobb, executive director of the SJSD Foundation, shared the importance of having students present at the breakfast.

“Well the students are why we all come every day,” Cobb said. “It’s why we go to work in the morning. It’s just the heartbeat of everything we do. And I believe we have great students, and they need to show their stuff.”

Apart from just the student emcees, there was also a panel of students that answered questions from Superintendent Gabe Edgar.

The panel included Central junior Mac Carlson, who expressed the importance of the district listening to students.

“It was a pleasure to be able to speak in front of all of these educators because I truly think that kids have the most important voice,” Carlson said. “We’re the ones who are there five days a week for seven hours of the day with hands-on with this new equipment.”

The SJSD Foundation has many plans for the upcoming school year, including its tenderloin challenge in October.
