Mrs. Mary Margaret Hicks was born on Sept. 1, 1932, to the late Thomas and Helen M. Fox, in Moberly. Missouri. She went to be with the Lord on Aug. 31, 2024. She was 91 years old.

Mrs. Hicks moved to St. Joseph as a teenager and attended Bartlett High School, where she met the love of her life, Moses L. Hicks. They later married, eloping to Atchison, Kansas, accompanied by two friends. The couple set up their home in St. Joseph, where they were married for nearly 70 years, until Mr. Hicks passed in December of 2018. Mrs. Hicks enjoyed being a homemaker and was a stay-at-home mom. She began working outside the home after the youngest child went to school. Mrs. Hicks worked at the former Noma Lites Company for several years before beginning her career as a Psychiatric Aide III at the former St. Joseph Hospital for 27 years. She made lifelong friendships during her employment and enjoyed spending her leisure time with them.

Mrs. Hicks was a member of the former 1st Baptist Mount Union Church. In her younger days she enjoyed roller skating, and was good at it. In her later years, she enjoyed her “soaps” Gunsmoke Westerns, WWE Wrestling, Lakers and Chiefs. Most of all, she loved 2-stepping with her husband.

On April 19, 1949, she married Moses “M.L.” Hicks. To this union were born 11 children. Deretha Spurr (Stephen), Moses L. Hicks, Jr., Margaret Hunter, Frederick R. Hicks, Victor M. Hicks (deceased), Carolyn K. Hicks, Paul W. Hicks Sr., Peter D. Hicks (Sandy), all of St. Joseph, Vickie Colbert (Jewell), Liberty, Missouri, Paula D. Hicks, Atlanta, Georgia, and George T. Hicks (Cynthia), SanDiego, California; in addition to her children, she is survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her spouse; son, Victor; brother, Thomas West Sr.; sister, Virginia Sue Thomas; stepfather, Otis Marshall Sr.; sister-in-law, Sarah Rowland-West; brother-in-law, Virgil Thomas Sr.; son-in-law, John A. Hunter; and twin great-grandsons.

Homegoing Celebration will be held Tuesday, Sept. 10, 11 a.m. New Hope Missionary Baptist Church 1824 Sylvanie Street, St. Joseph. Family visitation will be held at the church, one hour before the service. Interment Ashland Cemetery. Services entrusted to Bullock Family Funeral Chapel.
