A free self-defense class aims to help women keep themselves safe in a variety of situations.

The Kiwanis Club’s annual TAKE Defense class for girls and women of any age will be from 10 to noon on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Brookdale Student Ministry Gym, 3015 Felix St. Those interested can register at stjoemokiwanis.org/take-defense and T-shirts and tote bags also can be purchased on the site.

The training offers reality-based situations and covers internet, community, home and travel safety.

Money raised through sponsorships and T-shirt sales benefit YWCA of St. Joseph, the Ali Kemp Foundation and Kiwanis Club of St. Joseph.

The classes honor the legacy of Ali Kemp, a young woman who was murdered in a pool pump house in Johnson County, Kansas, in 2002.
