St. Joseph residents embraced the first day of Autumn by walking for a cause with the Alzheimer’s Association’s “Walk to End Alzheimer’s.”

The organization’s local chapter, Heart of America, held the annual walk at the St. Joe Casino Sunday morning to raise funds in the fight against Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

The morning began with the Promise Garden Flower Ceremony. Each color of flower represented different participants and their reasoning to walk: orange flower represents someone who supports the fight, yellow represents someone who is caring for a person with Alzheimer’s or Dementia, purple for someone who has lost a loved one to the disease and blue for someone who is currently living with it.

In the future, the chapter hopes to include a white flower, which will represent the survivors of Alzheimer’s once they have found a cure. Walkers carried these flowers to show their commitment and united front against the disease.

Sunday’s walk raised over $20,000 in the fight against Alzheimer’s. But the fight doesn’t end with the annual walk.

For those who were unable to participate in the annual walk, donations can still be made online act.alz.org.
