Fort Hays State 30, Missouri Western 16
The MIAA has its fair share of nationally ranked opponents, so it’s not unusually for the Griffons to run into one in their first game of conference play on Saturday. Fort Hays entered the game as the No. 24 team in Division II and they showed why they were worthy of being ranked. Griffons trailed 10-7 after the first quarter, but the Tigers created more cushion for themselves the rest of the way. MWSU quarterback Branden Berwald came into the game to replace Kane Donovan midway through Saturday’s game. Berwald finished 15-28 for 120 yards passing with 88 yards rushing. Western has its home opener on Sep. 14 against Missouri Southern.
Nebraska Kearney 21,
Northwest Missouri State 14
The Bearcats looked like they were going to run away with this game when they built a 14-7 after one quarter. However, the Lopers kept churning away and eventually found themselves scoring 14 unanswered points and staving off Northwest for the upset victory. Northwest had over 100 more yards of total offense than Kearney, but the Lopers were able to turn more of their possessions into points on the scoreboard. Northwest falls to 0-2 on the season following Saturday’s loss. They’ll return home next Saturday to face Fort Hays State.
Benedictine 45, William Penn 27
The Ravens got Saturday’s game against William Penn off with a bang when Dalton Witherspoon returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. The big play sparked Benedictine early and the Ravens rode that momentum all the way till the end. Junior Jackson Dooley combined efficiency and productivity in the win by completing 29 of 39 pass attempts for 338 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.
Illinois 23, Kansas 17
Jalon Daniels threw for 141 yards and two touchdowns in a stunning loss against the Fighting Illini. Devin Neal had 101 yards in rushing. The Jayhawks took a 17-13 lead in the third quarter in 14 plays that totaled 81 yards. The Fighting Illini answered back early in the fourth quarter with a touchdown, making it 20-17. Later, the Fighting Illini made a 43-yard field goal to extend the lead 23-17. The Jayhawks could not answer back in the last drive, ending the game with a sack and fumble.
Kansas State 34, Tulane 27
Kansas State safety Jack Fabris returned Tulane quarterback Darian Mensah’s fumble 60 yards for a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, and VJ Payne’s interception in the end zone in the final seconds helped the 17th-ranked Wildcats hold on for a 34-27 victory over Tulane. Tulane appeared to have scored a potential tying touchdown with 17 seconds left when Mensah hit Yulkeith Brown near the left pylon on first-and-goal, but receiver Dontae Fleming was called for offensive pass interference. Payne’s interception came two plays later. Avery Johnson passed for two touchdowns for Kansas State.
