New Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Carson Wentz has been around the block, making Kansas City the latest organization in his nine-year NFL journey.

The former No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 Draft landed on his fifth team when he signed with Kansas City in early April.

Wentz has been tasked with learning several different offensive schemes throughout his career. Learning the Chiefs offense has some comparisons to what he’s seen in the past, so stepping in and executing the plays can be seamless for the seasoned vet.

“There’s a handful of similarities and carryovers in some terminology, but just kind of the evolution of it and how they’ve done some really cool things here with different pieces. I’ve enjoyed the process and it’s a really cool system,” Wentz said during OTAs in June.

Entering the quarterback room as the likely backup to Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs’ backup can be the storyline at any given time. His 93 starts in his career will serve him well if ever asked to step in during the season. Even though it’s been some time since Wentz has been the clear-cut starter for a team, the process is still the same.

“It’s definitely different, but at the end of the day, I’m still approaching it to be ready,” Wentz said. “That’s the mindset you have to have in this league. You gotta always be ready to go when called upon.”

Wentz said during OTAs in June that he and three-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes have a great relationship. He said the relationship will keep growing and that he plans to find ways to help in any way he can.

Mahomes is no stranger to having an experienced backup behind him, so having another one in Wentz certainly won’t hurt.

“There’s no lie, (Mahomes) has been playing at an extremely high level for awhile, so I’ll find a way to help in whatever way I can whether that’s off the field, on the field, whatever and just be here to help and support,” Wentz said.
