Officials are recommending moving forward with a project that will remove the Interstate 229 double-decker bridge.

A release from the Missouri Department of Transportation said the preferred alternative is for the current double-decker bridge to be removed and replaced with a new four-lane road constructed at grade in generally the same location as the existing bridge. Access to Downtown would only be at Fourth Street and a new interchange at St. Joseph Avenue.

This plan would require the de-designation of I-229 as an interstate.

Officials have been discussing what to do about the aging bridge for several years.

MoDOT will have a public hearing from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, at Remington Nature Center, 1502 MacArthur Drive, to discuss the proposal. All interested persons will be allowed to be heard and an open-house format will be used.
