An unusual pet was rescued earlier this month thanks to the help of people in the community.

Maya the parrot is 10 years old and lives with Cindy Majors. Majors and Maya are best friends, spending most of their time with each other.

One recent evening, Majors decided to bring Maya outside as she normally does. This night was different, however, because it was the Fourth of July.

“So, her and I are, you know, quite the buddies,” Majors said. “But this night she just decided, it was about 5:30, she just took off and she made a circle around the house just as I was about to bring her in the house. And so I ran through the house trying to head her off to see where she went. I figured she wouldn’t go far. But I got to the backyard and I couldn’t find her.”

Majors assumed that Maya was scared due to the fireworks and flew away.

With the help of friends and neighbors, Majors was able to locate Maya in a nearby tree. The parrot became frightened though and flew to multiple trees in the neighborhood.

After three days of waiting for Maya to come down, Majors was able to get ahold of the Tree Time Tree Service, who work in conjunction with PJ’s Lawn and Tree Service.

Workers from the tree service were able to get Maya down along with the help of friends and neighbors. Majors tried to pay the tree service for the help, but they declined her money.

“But, I’m so glad to have her back,” Majors said. “And not one time did they ask me how much money this would be or they never mentioned a bill. I tried to compensate them, they said no.”

Majors said she wants to throw a celebration to thank everyone who helped her retrieve Maya.

“It was a group effort,” Majors said. “I just wanna bless everyone with, I’m a retired restaurateur and I’ve always had catering and concessions, so I would love to just make a big meal and bless them, whether it’s at their location or here. But I would love to set that up … as a thank you.”

Since being rescued, Maya is doing well and is back to being herself, Majors said.
