The St. Joseph School District soon will be looking for a new leader.
Superintendent Gabe Edgar announced Wednesday night that he will retire at the end of the 2024-25 school year. Edgar’s resignation is effective June 30, 2025.
“Serving this community has been an incredibly rewarding experience,” Edgar said. “It has been a pleasure to work with the St. Joseph School District staff and community over the past three years. Together, we have achieved much, and I am confident we will continue to do so this upcoming school year.”
According to a release from the district, a search will begin soon for a new superintendent following the Board of Education’s unanimous vote to accept Edgar’s intent to retire letter in a closed session Wednesday evening.
Edgar has been with the district since 2019 when he was hired as its chief financial officer. He was promoted to superintendent in July 2022.
Edgar has worked in public education for 28 years, beginning his career in the Marceline R-V district as a business teacher and coach.
During Edgar’s tenure, the St. Joseph School District saw the renewal of a 61-cent levy in August 2022 that increased teacher pay and helped upgrade heating and cooling and safety systems at schools. More recently, a no-tax-increase bond passed in April, which will upgrade fine arts and science and technology programs, enhance HVAC system efficiency, install turf fields and replace aging tracks at the three high schools and construct new roadways at Oak Grove and Carden Park elementary schools and replace broken sidewalks.
