A four-vehicle crash on Mason Road sent one woman to the hospital with moderate injuries late Wednesday afternoon.

St. Joseph police responded to the scene on Mason Road near South Eighth and Ninth streets after a four-vehicle crash occurred on the westbound lanes around 4 p.m.

A woman driving one of the vehicles was transported by Buchanan County EMS to the hospital with moderate injuries but is expected to be OK, according to police.

Details on what led to the crash are limited at this time. Police received conflicting statements from witnesses and are continuing to investigate.

Traffic was heavily impacted by the crash, which forced police to shut down both westbound lanes of traffic to work and clean up the scene. One of the four vehicles involved carried a large number of passengers who were unharmed.

Police had to direct westbound drivers onto a single eastbound lane to prevent significant traffic backups at the scene while both westbound lanes were closed.

By 5:30 p.m., both westbound lanes were reopened and traffic resumed as normal.

News-Press NOW will update this story as details become available.
